Week of May 28th: This week we will be learning about "Double-Digit Subtraction"
Week of May 22nd: We are into our second week of investigation into double digit addition. This week we are learning how to regroup. We have looked at adding using different strategies as the grade 2 expectation is to use standard and non-standard algorithms.
Week of April 9-13 This week we will be learning about "Growing & Shrinking" patterns
Week of April 2-6 This week we will be learning about "Location & Movement". Terms we will learn are: above, below, left, right, up, down. Week of March 26 - 30 This week we will be focusing on measuring "perimeter" Week of March 19-23 Fractions: This week, we will be looking at fractions as part of a whole. We will be looking at the relationship of the size of the part vs. how many parts it is broken into.
Week of March 5-9 Various math centres - basic math facts, addition and subtraction etc Week of Feb 26 - March 2 Data Management - review and students will be creating their own survey questions, making a bar graph and pictograph from their survey results and then interpreting their results. Week of Feb 19 - 23 Data Management - Bar Graphs & Pictographs
Week of Jan.29 - Feb.2 2D Geometry & Symmetry
Week of Jan.22nd-26th Our math focus this week is on "Division" Ex: 6 divided by 3 = 2 3 groups of 2
Week of Jan.15th-19th Our math focus this week is on "Multiplication" through repeated addition.
Week of Jan.8th-12th Our math focus this week is on Number Sense and working with numbers to 100. Students will be playing various math games where they will have to guess and check their numbers and give clues as to what their number could be. For example #36....it is bigger than 30 and less than 50. You can count by 2s to reach this number. It is also an even number. It has a six in the ones column. Later in the week we will also explore horizontal and vertical number lines.
Weeks of Dec 11th & 18th: Our math focus until Christmas Break will be on Money. We will be making connections between the base tens we have been working with and coins. For example 10 pennies make 1 dime, 10 dimes make a dollar.
Week of Dec. 4th: Our math focus this week will be on "Place Value". Week of Nov. 27th: Our math focus this week will be on "Measurement". We will be exploring measurement using non-standard units such as paperclips, straws, erasers and yarn.
Week of Nov.20th Our math focus this week will be on "Skip Counting Forward and Backwards". The grade two expectation is that students are able to skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, 20s & 25s to 100 and count backwards by 1s from 50.
Week of Nov.13th Students will be completing an assessment on "Equal Numbers to 18" based on the learning we have done over the past week. We will then be focusing on 'Estimation".
Week of Nov.6th This week students will be introduced to "Equal Number Expressions/Equality to 18". Example: 5 + __ = 8 + 1
Week of Oct.30th This week we will be continuing to explore our "Addition & Subtraction" centres. Student's will also be completing a subtraction exit card as a mini assessment on how well they are doing with the subtraction strategies taught over the past 2 weeks.
Week of Oct.23rd Last week we looked at addition strategies. This week we will be looking at subtraction strategies. A note will go home this week with the strategies that we will be using for your reference.
Week of Oct. 16th We are continuing with exploring addition strategies. We did not get as far as we would have liked last week so we will continue this week. We will be looking at doubles and using a number line. Students will also be completing single digit addition questions each day this week where they will have 2 minutes to answer as many questions as they can. I will be using the results to see where we are at with our quick addition facts.
Week of Oct. 9th We will continue exploring numbers and their relationships. We will also begin exploring addition strategies such as counting on/all, doubles/near-doubles, making ten and using a number line.
Week of Oct. 2nd We are beginning number investigations this week. We are looking at the concept of compensation and equivalence. For example, understanding that 5 + 3 is equivalent to 4 + 4. We will understand that if you lose one from the 5 but gain it on the 3, the total will stay the same.
Week of Sept 25th We will continue to work on sorting. Students will be completing an exit card this week to show their understanding of sorting objects. They will be asked to identify the sorting rule and label their categories. We will also begin exploring `numbers to 20`.
